How to make the Ocus scanner play in tune with your system

The Grundium Ocus series slide scanners make digital pathology very easy. An Ocus scanner is fully remote usable and cloud connected to make the best professional diagnosis available for all life, anywhere in the world.

There aren’t enough pathologists available for the increasing amount of diagnoses that need to be made. With only 24 hours in a day just working longer is not an option in a potentially life-saving profession, the workflows of the diagnoses need to be expedited. AI (Artificial Intelligence) solutions are a natural step to speed up the process – AI can do the tedious part of the work, like counting nuclei or spotting anomalies in dozens of slides so the expert only needs to examine the images that matter. These AI solutions obviously require a reliable and easy to use scanner to provide a sharp image of the tissue or fluid sample. An Ocus scanner is easy to integrate as the precision imaging component in almost any microscopic imaging system. A Grundium Ocus scanner with its remote use capability, compact size, and easy to integrate interface fits any workflow and lab space.

An Ocus scanner is normally used with a web application running on the web browser on any PC, Mac, Android tablet, or an iPad. The web application communicates with the Ocus scanner through an API (Application Programming Interface). This API is proprietary, but Grundium is happy to share it with integration partners under NDA.

Using the API is really easy. It is based on HTTP requests carrying JSON RPC requests and responses, which are mapped to specific functions explained and documented in the API specification. The API uses industry standard security protocols and hence both privacy and security are effortlessly included, and the API user doesn’t have to worry about it. Basically, anything that can be done in the normal Ocus UI, can also be done with the API, and even more. Grundium also provides a supporting C/C++ library for even easier integration. The API and the library enable you to pick your favorite programming language and framework, and Grundium will naturally provide you with assistance in the integration.

As part of an integrated solution, the Ocus scanners are capable of producing two types of image data. For time critical solutions requiring speed, the choice is an unstitched stream of images produced at the rate of scanning. Naturally, these images can be easily stitched together later too, if needed. For solutions requiring easy access to stitched image data, the choice is often to adopt the use of exported .SVS files or any other standard export format.

The human eye prefers to view stitched data, but AI algorithms usually don’t really care or could even prefer to get the data in small processable chunks as fast as possible. Unfortunately, there is no extensively used standard protocol for either of these types of . Therefore, Grundium has developed a plugin framework, which allows us to easily extend the Ocus’ capabilities to support almost any customer specific proprietary protocol for relaying either streamed or exported images.

With the Ocus API it is possible to create fully automatic diagnostic solutions for time critical diagnoses. The Grundium Ocus can help create solutions yielding a yes/no answer with literally a push of a button. As a reliable, easy to integrate and high precision scanner the Grundium Ocus checks all boxes.

If you are looking for a small footprint and sharp imaging component for your pathology solution or if you want to hear more about how to integrate an Ocus in your system, please feel free to contact us.
