WHAT'S IT LIKE TO INTERN AT GRUNDIUM?

Jutta Lukkala is studying Biomedical Sciences and Engineering

Grundium understands well the significance of applying theory and learned information in practice. We offer internships to students, whose studies benefit from practical experience at a medical technology company, and who in turn can make themselves useful during their internship.

Jutta Lukkala is in her fourth year of studying Biomedical Sciences and Engineering at the University of Tampere. She graduated with bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering, majoring in Medical Devices and Systems. Hungry for more, she now has her eyes on a Master of Science degree in Technology studies, majoring in Health Technology and Informatics. She applied for and got an internship at Grundium in early May, 2022.

Her position in Quality Management felt fitting: “I was able to put my learnings on the principals and tools of quality assurance to practice here at Grundium”, says Jutta. “I have learned a lot about quality requirements of manufacturing medical device during this internship, and I’ve seen what it’s like to work in organization that operates in a field of medical technology.”

Jutta remembers her department hosting a component supplier and how working together with the company on improving quality left a lasting impression. “Working with partner companies, suppliers, and subject matter experts has also pushed me forward and made me even more motivated to work in medical technology!”

When asked about how the internship has changed her, Jutta says: “I’ve gained a lot of confidence from many aspects of this work. Previously I’ve only worked in large organizations, so the mid-sized Grundium felt refreshingly functional. Communication between departments and individuals works really well here.”

Jutta is keen to share her experiences at Grundium with others who are looking to intern while studying: “Meet your challenges head-on, and ask questions!”, she says. “My colleagues at Grundium were always kind and helpful and would gladly discuss any question I had. The culture here is nurturing to new ways of doing things, and pitching ideas is encouraged. I feel like I can make a difference here.”

Jutta made sure her internship was time well spent, both for her and the employer. Her supervisor, Manufacturing Quality Manager Kirsti Sandell even gets a little teary-eyed talking about working with her intern: “Jutta has been an exceptional colleague, making everybody forget she is ‘only’ with us for an internship for now. I can’t describe the relief I felt when going on my summer vacation knowing every project was in good hands!” After her internship ended in early September, Jutta was quickly hired by Grundium to continue work as a Quality Specialist part-time along her studies.

If you are studying optics, medical technology, biotech, electronics design, or something else which could be of mutual benefit, and you are interested in interning at Grundium, send an open application to HR Manager Päivi Tainio to paivi.tainio@grundium.com
