Grundium enables easy remote imaging for our customers ranging from individual clinics and hospitals to health systems, all the way to enterprises providing laboratory services. The small footprint, high-precision and affordable Ocus® microscope scanners are equally practical in any field of microscopy, such as pathology, AI diagnosis, marine sciences, environmental research, geology and material sciences.

Grundium comes from the world of mobile technology and is home to a unique blend of expertise ranging from compact hardware design, software design, camera technology and optical physics to sourcing, precision manufacturing and business development.

History

BEFORE GRUNDIUM

Grundium is founded by ex-Nokia technology development directors with more than 20-years of experience in optics, sensors and developing HW/SW for manufacturing. Around the mid 2010’s this group of people grew a shared desire to take all the experience and knowhow of mobile imaging they had built and turn it into something new. A decision to establish a new enterprise using imaging and mobile technology to benefit all mankind was made.

GRUNDIUM IS ESTABLISHED

Established in October 2015, Grundium got off to a running start. In the beginning the startup subcontracted for various camera and image processing systems´ development for manufacturing, healthcare, etc. industries. Experiments with a number of technologies, including 3D imaging and 360 view were made and piloted, but they didn’t feel right. Finally, a feasibility study, plenty of legwork, meeting with people and asking questions led into discovering a clear market gap and problem in digital pathology. There was an immediate demand for a portable high resolution whole slide imaging device, which absolutely required the specific knowhow and expertise of compact electronics, such as mobile phones. The jigsaw pieces fell into place. Grundium did research on selected markets and targeted regions, interviewed digital pathology experts, development partners and potential clients to define the main user needs and to validate competitive advantages over current solutions, defined an IP protection strategy, drafted a commercialisation strategy and selected the key development and value-chain partners.

IMPORTANT MILESTONES

  • Grundium is established in October 2015.

  • In December 2017, Grundium secured a sizeable venture capital investment. The funding helped fast forward marketing and the early commercialization.

  • In early to mid 2018 the first prototypes were built and distributed for test use and feedback around key digital pathology labs in Europe, North America and Asia. Experts were heard and the product was updated and improved.

  • The first commercial devices were delivered in late 2018. 2018-19 Grundium also toured tradeshows, conferences and other events extensively showing the small, beautiful and powerful device, which had been given the name Ocus.

  • In May 2020 Grundium launched a second scanner model with a higher 40x magnification, the Grundium Ocus40. In September the same year Grundium expanded from human pathology into veterinary diagnosis with Zoetis.

  • The third model in the Ocus series, the Ocus20, was launched a year later in May 2021. The Ocus20 is optimized for fast scanning speed and a high depth of field, making it especially suitable for tissue pathology in e.g. cancer treatment and research.

FUTURE

Grundium’s mission to make professional diagnosis available for all life extends beyond pathology to everything from marine biology to environmental sciences, and perhaps even to the inanimate in material sciences and geology. Our desire to apply our shared experience and expertise in making life better for all life is reflected in the work we do. We're growing fast, but based on a solid foundation of respect and values. The future looks sharp and Grundium continues to serve various industries and businesses enhancing quality and processes, protecting life and safeguarding a clean environment.
